Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (choose a mix with a bit of fat for juicier burgers)
- 4 to 6 tablespoons Lipton Onion Soup Mix
- 2 1/2 tablespoons butter
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- A pinch of thyme
- 3/4 cup water (adjust as needed)
- 1 tablespoon brandy or Sherry (optional but recommended)
- 4 to 8 ounces Swiss or Provolone cheese (your preference)
- 4 burger buns
- Butter or oil for brushing (for toasting buns)
Instructions
- Preparation Phase: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with Lipton Onion Soup Mix. Mix thoroughly and let the beef rest while preparing the onions.
- Caramelize the Onions:
- Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.
- Add the thinly sliced onions, a pinch of thyme, and water. Cover and simmer.
- Once the water evaporates, uncover and continue cooking, stirring occasionally. Add more water if necessary.
- Finish with a splash of brandy or Sherry when the onions are golden-brown.
- Cooking the Burgers:
- Shape the seasoned beef into 4 patties, making a slight dent in each.
- Cook the patties on medium-high heat to your preferred doneness.
- Top with caramelized onions and cheese during the last few minutes of cooking.
- Serving the Burgers:
- Toast the buns with butter or oil until crispy.
- Assemble by placing the cheese-topped patties on the buns, adding more onions if desired.
Notes
