Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 pound ground pork (or ground turkey)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, minced
- 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
- 2 cups coleslaw mix (or shredded cabbage)
- 1 large carrot, julienned or shredded
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional for a bit of heat)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
- 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Cook the Pork: In a large pot, heat the sesame oil over medium-high heat. Add the ground pork and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
- Sauté the Aromatics: Add the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger to the pot. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until softened and fragrant.
- Add the Broth and Veggies: Pour in the chicken broth, followed by the coleslaw mix and shredded carrot. Stir to combine.
- Season the Soup: Stir in the soy sauce, rice vinegar, Chinese five-spice powder, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring the soup to a simmer and cook for 10-15 minutes, until the vegetables are tender and the flavors have melded together.
- Serve: Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with sliced green onions and fresh cilantro, if desired. Serve immediately.
Notes
- You can substitute the ground pork with ground chicken or turkey for a leaner option.
- For extra richness, add a boiled egg on top, mimicking the egg roll experience.
- If you prefer a thicker soup, you can stir in a tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with water towards the end of cooking to thicken the broth.
