Description
A delicious twist on the classic grilled cheese sandwich, the Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese combines a savory, tangy ground beef mixture with melted cheese between two golden, crispy slices of bread. Perfect for a quick, comforting meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 8 slices of bread (your choice of white, whole wheat, or sourdough)
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened
- 8 slices of cheese (cheddar, American, or your favorite cheese)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion to the skillet with the beef and cook for 2-3 minutes, until softened.
- Stir in the ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens and becomes saucy. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Butter one side of each slice of bread. On the unbuttered side, place a slice of cheese, then a generous spoonful of the sloppy joe mixture. Top with another slice of cheese and another slice of bread, buttered side facing out.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Place the prepared sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them rest for a minute before slicing in half. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- For a spicier kick, add some hot sauce or diced jalapeños to the sloppy joe mixture.
- If you prefer a vegetarian version, use plant-based ground meat as a substitute for the beef.
- For extra crunch, try adding pickles or coleslaw inside the sandwich.
