Description

These Spicy Chickpea Patties are a perfect combination of crunchy texture and bold flavor. Made with mashed chickpeas, aromatic spices, and fresh herbs, they’re easy to make and great for sandwiches, wraps, or as a stand-alone dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro or parsley
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for spiciness)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 egg (or flax egg for vegan option)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus extra for cooking)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon turmeric or curry powder for extra flavor

Instructions

  1. Mash the Chickpeas:
In a large bowl, mash the chickpeas with a fork or potato masher until most are mashed, but leave some chunks for texture.

  2. Mix the Ingredients:
To the mashed chickpeas, add breadcrumbs, chopped cilantro, chopped onion, garlic, cumin, coriander, chili powder, cayenne pepper, paprika, and lemon juice. Add the egg (or flax egg) and mix until everything is well combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste. If the mixture feels too wet, add more breadcrumbs until it holds together.

  3. Form the Patties:
Divide the mixture into 6-8 equal portions and shape them into patties about 1/2-inch thick. You can adjust the size based on your preference.

  4. Cook the Patties:
Heat 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Be gentle when flipping as they can be a bit delicate.

  5. Serve:
Remove the patties from the skillet and drain on a paper towel. Serve them with your favorite toppings like avocado, a dollop of yogurt or tahini sauce, and a side of salad or in a pita bread wrap.

Notes

  • For extra crunch, you can coat the patties in breadcrumbs or cornmeal before frying.
  • If you prefer a spicier kick, feel free to add more cayenne or a finely chopped jalapeño to the mixture.
  • These patties are great for meal prep and can be stored in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.

  • To make them vegan, use a flax egg: mix 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed with 3 tablespoons of water, let it sit for 5 minutes until it thickens.
