Description
This Strawberry Balsamic Jam is a deliciously tangy and sweet spread that pairs the natural sweetness of ripe strawberries with the rich, savory depth of balsamic vinegar. Perfect for spreading on toast, adding to cheeses, or as a topping for meats like grilled chicken or pork. A sophisticated twist on traditional strawberry jam!
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds fresh strawberries, hulled and quartered
- 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar (use a good quality aged balsamic for best flavor)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper (optional, for a subtle savory kick)
Instructions
- Prepare the Strawberries:
- Hull the strawberries and cut them into quarters. Place them into a large saucepan or pot.
- Cook the Jam Base:
- Add the balsamic vinegar, sugar, and lemon juice to the strawberries. Stir well to combine.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer. Stir occasionally to ensure the sugar dissolves evenly.
- Simmer and Reduce:
- Allow the jam mixture to simmer, uncovered, for 30-45 minutes, stirring frequently. As it simmers, the strawberries will break down and the mixture will thicken.
- To test the jam’s consistency, place a small spoonful on a chilled plate and run your finger through it. If it wrinkles and holds its shape, it’s ready. If not, continue simmering for a few more minutes.
- Add Final Flavors:
- Once the jam has reached the desired thickness, stir in the vanilla extract (if using) and ground black pepper (if desired). These additions will enhance the flavor profile, adding a bit of warmth and complexity.
- Cool and Store:
- Remove the jam from heat and let it cool for 10-15 minutes. Transfer the jam to a clean jar or container and let it cool completely at room temperature. Once cooled, store in the refrigerator. The jam will thicken even more as it cools.
- Serve:
- Enjoy the jam within 1-2 weeks, or preserve it by canning it using your preferred method for long-term storage.
Notes
- Sweetness: Depending on the sweetness of your strawberries, you can adjust the sugar amount to suit your taste. Start with the suggested amount and add more if needed.
- Texture: For a smoother jam, blend the mixture with an immersion blender once it’s cooked, or mash the strawberries to your desired consistency.
- Uses: This jam pairs wonderfully with cheeses (especially goat cheese or brie), grilled meats, or as a spread on toast or sandwiches. It also makes a great gift!
