Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast (or 2 1/4 tsp)
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 lb Italian sausage, cooked and crumbled
- 1/2 cup pepperoni slices
- 1/2 cup bell pepper, diced
- 1/2 cup onion, diced
- 1 can (15 oz) pizza sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp dried oregano
- 1/4 tsp dried basil
- 1/4 cup melted butter (for brushing)
- 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and olive oil. Add the yeast mixture and stir until dough forms. Knead on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until smooth.
- Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9-inch deep-dish pie pan or a similar-sized baking dish.
- Roll out the dough to fit the pan, leaving some excess hanging over the edges.
- Layer the bottom of the crust with mozzarella cheese, followed by cooked sausage, pepperoni, bell pepper, and onion. Pour pizza sauce over the top and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, oregano, and basil.
- Fold the dough edges over the top of the filling, sealing the pie. Brush the dough with melted butter and optionally brush with a beaten egg for a golden finish.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly. Let the pizza pie cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Feel free to swap the sausage and pepperoni for your favorite pizza toppings like mushrooms, olives, or bell peppers.
- If you like a crispier crust, pre-bake the bottom crust for 5 minutes before adding the filling.
- This pizza pie can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 2 days, then reheated in the oven.
- Add some crushed red pepper flakes to the sauce for a spicy kick!
