Description
This creamy, sweet Sugar Cookie Frosting is the perfect topping for your freshly baked sugar cookies. With a smooth, velvety texture and just the right amount of sweetness, it’s easy to make and can be colored and decorated for any occasion!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk (or heavy cream for a richer frosting)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Food coloring (optional, for decoration)
- Sprinkles or other toppings (optional)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy, about 1-2 minutes.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, 1/2 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Add the milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches your desired consistency (use more for a thinner frosting or less for thicker frosting).
- Stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.
- If you’d like to color the frosting, add a few drops of food coloring and mix until you achieve the desired color.
- Frost your cooled sugar cookies with a spatula or piping bag.
- Top with sprinkles, edible glitter, or other decorations as desired.
- Let the frosting set for about 30 minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a fluffier frosting, you can add 1/4 teaspoon of almond extract or use half milk and half heavy cream.
- This frosting will harden slightly once it sets but will remain soft enough to bite into, making it perfect for cookies.
- You can store the frosting in an airtight container for up to 3 days at room temperature, or in the fridge for up to a week. If refrigerated, let it come to room temperature before using.
