Description

Crispy, golden, and delicious, these Tennessee Onions are the perfect side dish or appetizer to add flavor and texture to any meal. Coated in a seasoned batter and fried to perfection, these onion rings are a Southern-inspired favorite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions, peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch rings
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for extra heat)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Soak the onions: Place the sliced onion rings in a bowl and cover with buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes to tenderize and absorb flavor.
  2. Prepare the batter: In a separate bowl, mix together flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  3. Coat the onions: After the onions have soaked, remove them from the buttermilk and dredge them in the flour mixture until evenly coated.
  4. Fry the onions: Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 375°F (190°C). Fry the onion rings in batches for 2-3 minutes until golden and crispy.
  5. Drain excess oil: Remove the cooked onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
  6. Serve: Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch or barbecue sauce.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness: For an even crunchier coating, dip the coated onion rings back into the buttermilk and then back into the flour mixture before frying.
  • Flavor variations: Add a pinch of dried herbs like thyme or oregano to the flour mixture for a more aromatic twist.
  • Serving suggestion: Great on the side with burgers, fried chicken, or served as a snack with a dipping sauce.
  • Storage: Leftover onion rings can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven to restore crispiness.
