- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups white sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup sour cream
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup water
- 5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (for the cake)
- 6 tablespoons milk (for the cake)
- 5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (for the icing)
- ½ cup butter (for the icing)
- 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup chopped walnuts (Optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 10×15-inch pan.
- Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Beat in sour cream and eggs. Set aside.
- In a saucepan, melt 1 cup butter on low, then add water and 5 tablespoons cocoa powder. Bring to a boil and remove from heat. Cool slightly and mix into the egg mixture until blended.
- Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- For the icing: In a large saucepan, combine milk, 5 tablespoons cocoa powder, and ½ cup butter. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat.
- Stir in confectioners’ sugar and vanilla. Fold in chopped walnuts and spread the icing over the warm cake.
Notes
Optional: Add chopped walnuts to the icing for extra texture.
