  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Topping (Sugar Shell):

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder (optional, for a chocolatey twist)
  • Red food coloring (optional, for a pink or red topping)
  • Sprinkles (optional, for extra decoration)

Instructions

  1. ual portions.
  2. Shape each portion into a smooth ball and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  3. Gently press each ball into a heart shape using your hands or a rolling pin.
  4. Apply the Sugar Topping:
    • Roll out each portion of the sugar shell topping and cut it into heart shapes that will fit on top of the dough.
    • Place a sugar topping heart on each dough ball and lightly press it down to adhere. Use a knife or a spatula to score the top in a concha pattern (a criss-cross or swirl pattern).
    • Optionally, add sprinkles or extra decorative touches to the topping.
  5. Let the Dough Rise Again:
    • Cover the shaped conchas with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, until puffed up.
  6. Bake the Conchas:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the conchas for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown on top and cooked through. Let them cool on a wire rack.
  7. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Once the conchas have cooled, serve them fresh with coffee or hot chocolate. They’re perfect for sharing with loved ones on Valentine’s Day!

Notes

  • If you don’t have red food coloring, you can skip it or use other colors to match the occasion.
  • These conchas are best eaten the day they are baked, but you can store them in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • You can freeze unbaked conchas after they’ve risen and before baking. To bake from frozen, just place them directly into a preheated oven, adding a few extra minutes of bake time.
