Description

These Valentine’s Day Puff Pastry Hearts are an easy and elegant treat for your loved ones. With layers of buttery, flaky puff pastry and a sweet filling, they’re perfect for a romantic Valentine’s Day dessert or breakfast. Add a drizzle of icing or a dusting of powdered sugar for the ultimate festive touch!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Pastry Hearts:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/4 cup raspberry jam or strawberry jam (or your favorite jam)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

For the Icing (optional):

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • A few drops of red food coloring (optional)

For Garnish (optional):

  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • Sprinkles or mini chocolate chips (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Puff Pastry:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface to smooth out any creases and make it even.
    • Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out hearts from the puff pastry sheet. You should get around 6-8 hearts, depending on the size of your cutter.
    • Transfer the hearts to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  2. Fill the Pastry Hearts:
    • In the center of half of the hearts, add a small spoonful of your chosen jam, spreading it evenly but leaving a border around the edges.
    • Place the remaining hearts on top of the jam-covered hearts to form a sandwich. Press the edges gently with a fork to seal the edges tightly.
  3. Egg Wash:
    • In a small bowl, whisk the egg with a tablespoon of water to make an egg wash. Brush the tops of the puff pastry hearts with the egg wash for a golden, shiny finish when baked.
  4. Bake the Hearts:
    • Bake the puff pastry hearts for 15-18 minutes, or until they are puffed up and golden brown.
    • Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack.
  5. Make the Icing (optional):
    • While the hearts are cooling, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and a few drops of red food coloring (if using) to create a smooth icing.
    • Once the pastry hearts are cooled, drizzle the icing over the top of each one, or dip the top of each heart into the icing.
  6. Garnish and Serve:
    • If desired, sprinkle with extra powdered sugar or decorate with sprinkles or mini chocolate chips for an extra festive touch.
    • Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • You can also add a small piece of chocolate or Nutella inside the pastry hearts before sealing them for an extra chocolatey twist.
  • These can be made ahead of time and stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven for a few minutes to get them crisp again.
