Description

These soft and flaky scones are a perfect combination of creamy white chocolate and earthy matcha flavors. Ideal for breakfast or afternoon tea!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp matcha powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup white chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp milk (for brushing)

Instructions

    1. Preheat & Prep: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    2. Make the Dough:
      • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, matcha powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
      • Add the cold cubed butter and cut it into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
      • In a separate bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, egg, and vanilla extract.
      • Pour the wet ingredients into the flour mixture and gently mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
      • Fold in the white chocolate chips.
    3. Shape the Scones:
      • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a 1-inch thick disc.
      • Cut into 8 wedges or use a round cutter for a more traditional scone shape.
      • Place scones on the prepared baking sheet and brush the tops with extra heavy cream.
    4. Bake:
      • Bake for 15-18 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
      • Let them cool on a wire rack.

Prepare the Glaze (Optional):

    1. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
    2. Drizzle over the cooled scones.

Notes

  • Storage: These scones are best enjoyed fresh, but you can store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days.
  • Freezing: To freeze, place the scones on a baking sheet in the freezer for 1-2 hours until firm, then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. To reheat, bake from frozen at 375°F (190°C) for 10-12 minutes.
  • Matcha Quality: For the best flavor and color, use high-quality culinary-grade matcha.
  • Glaze: The glaze is optional, but it adds a nice sweetness and visual appeal. If you prefer a less sweet scone, you can skip the glaze.
  • Butter Substitute: For a dairy-free version, you can substitute the unsalted butter with a dairy-free butter alternative.
