Description

White Sauce Spaghetti is a creamy and comforting pasta dish made with a luscious white sauce, often referred to as béchamel sauce, and tossed with spaghetti. This dish is easy to make and is perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or when you’re craving something rich and satisfying. You can add veggies or grilled chicken for an added boost of flavor and texture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 200g spaghetti
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk (preferably whole milk)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions in salted boiling water until al dente. Drain the pasta, reserving about 1/4 cup of pasta water for later, and set aside.
  2. In a large pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and whisk continuously to form a smooth roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes, ensuring the mixture doesn’t brown.
  3. Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Once the milk is incorporated, add the heavy cream and continue to stir. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the sauce begins to thicken.
  4. Season the sauce with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and oregano (if using). Stir in the grated Parmesan cheese until fully melted and the sauce is smooth and creamy.
  5. Add the cooked spaghetti to the pan with the white sauce. Toss to coat the pasta evenly, adding reserved pasta water if needed to thin the sauce to your desired consistency.
  6. Once the pasta is well coated with the sauce, remove from heat and serve immediately. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and extra Parmesan cheese, if desired.

Notes

  • For added flavor, you can stir in some sautéed mushrooms, spinach, or grilled chicken into the sauce.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can reduce the amount of milk or add a little more flour to the roux.
  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free pasta and a gluten-free flour blend.
  • If you don’t have heavy cream, you can use whole milk for a lighter version, but the sauce won’t be as rich and creamy.
